Hi Gala Guru,
I’m wondering how you would plan cocktails or a meal where dietary restrictions must be considered. Vegetarian, vegan, gluten, and lactose issues are more prevalent than they were in the past, so how would you handle menu choices while keeping everyone happy?
Robert
Good question, Robert, especially with the party season coming up.
Planning a dinner party for a culinary-diverse crowd is like navigating a maze. You wonder if you will be able to figure it out. Here are some ideas to help you.
I’ve found it’s easiest to let guests build their own. For the main course, think Taco bars, Buddha bowls, customizable pasta stations (with gluten-free noodles), or even a baked potato station with toppings that lets each guest construct a meal that fits their needs. Offer a variety of sauces, proteins, and toppings on the side.
You can do the same with dessert. Set up a dessert bar with fruits, cookies, brownies, and ice cream. Include a dairy-free version and all the toppings for a DIY dessert bar.
Remember to label everything. Signage can prevent dietary disasters. Setting up food stations lets everyone get it their way, and it’s also easier on you as the host. You can do the same thing with a beverage bar.
Communication is the key to a successful dinner party. Reach out to your guests weeks before the event to discuss their dietary restrictions and any allergies. This proactive approach can prevent last-minute surprises, save you from potential embarrassment, and, most importantly, show your guests that you care about their needs.
With some prior planning and a little creativity, you’ll host a gathering where the only thing people are allergic to is leaving early!
And if all else fails, wine is a universal crowd-pleaser. Just make sure it’s vegan-friendly because, yes, that’s a thing—cheers to dietary inclusivity and getting through the evening without an EpiPen.
Remember, there is always a reason to celebrate!
