Dear Gala Guru,
My job does not make me happy. It is a dead end. I hate turning off the alarm and going back to the office. It is toxic where I work. Office gossip runs rampant, and no one is happy. The boss is not a leader. I do not feel as though I make a difference. This isn’t my forever job. I am 30 and just hanging on until the right job comes along. Since you advise celebrating everything, what is your advice on finding happiness in this job I hate?
Feeling stuck
Dear Stuck,
I truly understand the feeling of being trapped in a soul-draining job. While it pays the bills, it’s stealing something far more precious—your spark, your sense of purpose. But here’s the beautiful thing. You’ve already taken the first crucial step by acknowledging that this isn’t your path. Celebrate that!
This awareness is more valuable than you might realize.
I would search within and figure out what you really want to do in life. If you hate turning off the alarm and dread going to this job, it’s probably time to think about changing your path. You need a goal and a plan. Get out a piece of paper and write down all the things you would really love to do that would make you jump out of bed.
The journey ahead might be slow and require some strategic planning. Maybe you’ll need to balance night classes with your current job, or perhaps you’ll start building skills through online courses during lunch breaks. Every small step counts. It may take some time, but focusing on your goal will give you something to look forward to.
Here’s something else. Many successful professionals love sharing their wisdom with others who show genuine interest in their field. Reach out to them. You’ll often find that people are incredibly generous with their guidance when they see someone passionate about following a similar path.
Remember, staying in a job that dims your light isn’t just about enduring daily discomfort – it’s about missing out on the incredible contributions you could make in a role that genuinely suits you. Your dissatisfaction isn’t a weakness; it’s your inner compass pointing you toward something better.
Your future self will thank you for having the courage to make this change.
Remember, there’s always a reason to celebrate!
